 CHERYL KRAJCI

When were you diagnosed, what action did you take, where were you treated?
I was diagnosed in April 2005 and my doctor referred me to Dr. Walker, a surgeon at Froedtert Hospital. I had a lumpectomy in May 2005 (performed by Dr. Walker at Froedtert Hospital) followed by radiation.

What does breast cancer mean to you?
It means that my family now has a history of breast cancer that it didn’t have before, which makes me sad, but I can’t change that or dwell on the “why me?” One of my first thoughts when I was diagnosed was for my daughter because I have put her at a higher risk of having breast cancer.

How important is it to you to raise awareness of breast cancer?
Very important…1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. My husband and I are always asking our female friends, “When was your last mammogram?”

What message would you want to share with others?
Have annual mammograms…early detection is so important.

What are your thoughts on Survivors' Circle?
I think it’s a tremendous thing that Lindsey is doing, especially at her age, and I can’t wait to meet her. She is obviously a very motivated individual with an important mission at hand.

What was the battle with breast cancer like for you?
Well, at the time, there were lots of things going on in my life. My mother-in-law died 5 days after my surgery, my daughter was graduating from high school and my parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. These things took the focus off me because there were so many other things going on. Froedtert Hospital was on my way to work so I’d get radiation each morning and start work after that. My boss was flexible and understanding, which allowed me to do that. Looking back, I’m glad it was summertime because the time flew by (like summers do, especially Wisconsin summers!) and I was finishing radiation before I knew it.

Where you are in your life now?
I’m almost at the 2-year mark on tamoxifen and doing well. I’m happily married (for 26 years) to a great guy that was so supportive through my diagnosis and treatment. I can truly say that life is good and I have been blessed.

Is there anyone you would thank for helping you along the way?
My family and friends…they were a great support and always there for me.

Are there any quotes, verses, or inspiring thoughts that you have lived by through this process?
I would say live each day to the fullest and tell the people you love that you love them. Keep the big picture in mind and don’t let little things upset you.

Katy Trail 5k 05.19.2009
Last Thursday my friend, Leah, and I ran in the Katy Trail 5k. The Katy Trail is a privately maintained public park in uptown Dallas. The marathon was the annual event used to raise money for the Friends of the Katy Trail, the nonprofit organization that is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the Katy Trail. Leah and I, along with about 5,000 others ran to support the Katy Trail and have fun in our community! I was thrilled to be participating in the event and loved getting to see how my community came together to support our gorgeous public park. The 5K, memberships of the Katy Trail, and the local support of our restaurants and businesses have helped raise more than $20 million, naming the Katy Trail one of the great American public parks. Thank you to those who sponsored the event and to everyone who ran/walked in the race. Looking forward to seeing you all next year! ... full entry
